| Location | Dragonspine Region → The Scar |
| Duration | 3 hours 34 minutes |
Summary
The party pursued Vol'kathar, an ancient white dragon, across the Dragonspine Mountains toward his lair after a desperate confrontation at Toothmaw Cliff. Despite severe injuries and exhaustion, the group pushed forward driven by the knowledge that Kavu had been captured. Upon reaching the volcanic peak where the dragon dwelt, reality itself fractured. A divine convergence erupted as multiple planar forces intersected above the volcano—four flames descended from the sky (white-gold, bronze, an impossible otherworldly color, and the volcano's own molten core), transforming the mountain in a catastrophic eruption that was upward rather than outward. Vol'kathar crystallized in divine fire, frozen as a monument. Kavu was found alive but missing one arm, having activated his Ember Compass inside the dragon's mouth to trigger the convergence. The party collected magical crystal shards and witnessed the permanent transformation of the region into a planar wound that will draw scholars, pilgrims, and madmen for centuries.
Key Events
The Pursuit
- Party at Toothmaw Cliff after ritual; severely injured (especially Kefkas)
- Vol'kathar has captured Kavu and carried him away
- Party decides pursuit is urgent: "This is an emergency. We can't stop."
- Three-hour forced march across mountainous terrain toward dragon's lair
- Party pushes through despite exhaustion: "I think this is a suicide mission, but I'm gonna go with him."
- Terrain: rocky passages, wooded valleys, extremely challenging conditions
Arrival at the Lair
- Party reaches volcanic peak, described as "a black tooth against a darkening sky"
- Located approximately 20 miles from initial approach point
- Volcano shows thin wisp of perpetual smoke; perpetual red glow from molten core
- Monument to Vol'kathar's dominion over the region
The Divine Convergence (The Central Event)
- Planar Breach Opens: A tear splits open in the sky above the volcano
- Golden Light Breaks Through: Molten gold-colored light breaks reality itself
- Other World Visible: Party glimpses an alien sky, foreign constellations, golden-ringed sphere (not Toril's moon)
- Haldak's Detection: Divine magic detected; reality corruption violating normal cosmology
- Three Divine Flames Manifest (and the volcano's reply):
- White-Gold Flame: Pure divine fire with absolute conviction; strikes volcano like hammer blow
- Bronze Flame: Ancient, deeper presence; familiar despite being alien; spirals toward mountain with purpose
- Impossible Color Flame: Fire in colors outside normal spectrum; feels like "warmth without heat," "coming home," "love rendered as light"
- Red Glow: Volcano's molten core; merges with three divine flames
- Selene's Vision: Loses her hunter's mark on Vol'kathar; perceives two vast figures reaching across impossible distance, touching, reuniting; overwhelmed with awe
The Eruption
- Upward Explosion (not outward like natural volcanoes): Divine eruption fundamentally different
- Light Magnitude: Turns night to day across approximately 100 miles radius
- Heat Projection: Felt intensely even 20 miles away "like standing too close to a forge"
- Divine Imagery: Shapes within the fire appear like gods dancing in their native flames
- Planar Closure: Tear in the sky slowly seals as the event completes
The Scar (Permanent World Transformation)
- Area Affected: Approximately 10 miles around volcano permanently changed
- Landscape Changes:
- Grass chars black then immediately regrows as something new; more alive than natural
- Stones crack and reform into new configurations
- Trees burst into flame but emerge unburned with golden-edged leaves
- River steams and begins to glow with permanent heat
- Obsidian glass crater floor forms with liquid glass appearance
- Otherworldly Properties:
- Thousands of glittering crystal fragments fall from the sky
- Fragments glow golden; hum with misaligned power from another universe
- Fragments extremely valuable; described as "pieces of creation"
- Flames behave wrongly; sparks drift upward then sideways as if uncertain of direction
- Air tastes of sulfur and incense from non-existent temples
- Glass floor warm to touch; pressing palm reveals sensation of something pressing back from other side
- Reality fundamentally altered; will draw pilgrims, scholars, and madmen for centuries
Vol'kathar's Crystallization
- Vol'kathar appears as crystallized monument at center of caldera
- Frozen by divine magic; no longer animate or threat
- Wreathed in protective aura; no indication of recovery possible
- Monument remains at The Scar as permanent feature
Reunion with Kavu
- Kavu found alive at foot of dragon monument
- Missing his entire right arm (consumed by Vol'kathar during the chaos)
- Arm cauterized by divine healing magic; no infection or pain
- Appearance noticeably changed: eyes less bulging, brow more scaled and furrowed; appears more draconic
- Party overwhelmed with relief and emotion at his survival
Kavu's Account of Events
- Vol'kathar gloated over his capture, boasting of plans
- Kavu took desperate action: jumped at dragon to give him "a taste of what he wanted"
- Dragon snapped at Kavu as he approached, jaws closing around him
- Compass Activation: Kavu pushed the button on his mysterious Ember Compass
- Expected compass would throw him back in time again (referencing previous use)
- Instead: triggered the divine convergence; something immense and incomprehensible occurred
- Kavu sensed powerful divine presence: "I felt Kha'Zix!" (name of divine being or aspect—exact meaning unclear)
- Arm was severed by dragon's bite during the chaos
- Divine healing magic instantly cauterized wound; no infection or pain remains
Collection of Divine Fragments
- Party begins collecting yellow-glowing crystal shards from devastated landscape
- Shards highly magical and valuable; fragments from another universe
- Size range: fingernail-sized splinters to chunks larger than human head
- Party collects multiple shards; Selene acquires at least one with unusual properties
- Ongoing loot collection throughout remainder of session
Ominous Presence Detected
- Party senses something approaching The Scar
- Something that "felt the wound open" and has been "crawling toward it for hours"
- Described as from the Underdark/The Deep Dark
- Demons from the Abyss may be walking freely due to planar breach
- Ground begins to shake as presence approaches
- Haldak urges immediate retreat: "I think we should get back"
Return via Ember Compass
- Ember Compass activated/activated by party
- Compass grows warm; glyphs spin faster
- Countdown from 10 to 0
- Kavu takes one last look at Flame Meat (his home village)
- Village stands fully intact; people safe; flames have been banked
- Companions gather close for journey back
- Planar Transition: Familiar Underdark darkness replaces warm afternoon light of Flame Meat
- Transition quality: Gentler this time; compass has "learned to be kind"
- Party returns to exact location they left from (near Tarrasque/Underdark)
- Evidence of journey: Kavu's missing arm and party's transformation (fully clean, well-fed, well-rested appearance)
Return to Underdark
- Party reappears in "the butthole" (party's slang for location in Tarrasque digestive tract)
- Othorion and Lireal and others who didn't travel experienced only a blink from their perspective
- Party members cleaned up and transformed compared to how they left (covered in creature slop)
- Kavu noticeably changed: cooler appearance, slight draconic features, missing arm
- Othorion: "What in the absolute fuck? Where's your arm?"
- Kavu: "Don't worry about it. Eaten by a dragon. It's so long."
- Party members question what happened during absence
- Kavu offers to find somewhere to sit and explain entire situation
