A desperate battle in a volcanic amphitheater as the party raced to save hostages while a dragon ascended to godhood before their eyes.
Session Summary
Opening
The party arrived at Toothmaw Cliffs, a volcanic amphitheater dominated by an active fire vortex churning above a 20-foot-deep pit. Volcathar, a young red dragon, circled below while Father Corvan and his fire cult prepared a blood ritual using six bound hostages positioned on spikes around the vortex. The bright vortex light blinded the cultists to the party's approach through sulfurous fog, granting tactical advantage. The party chose to prioritize saving lives over dealing maximum damage, carefully discussing split-group tactics to avoid concentrated dragon breath weapon attacks.
Middle
The party divided into north and south groups. Kavu opened combat with a radiant-type Fireball (8d6 damage) at cultist positions, dealing 28 damage to four cultists and 14 to one—all survived. Haldak cast Haste on Selene for extra actions. Haldak previously cast Protection from Energy (fire) on Roland before combat. Kefkas moved to the south position with darkness coverage. Selene fired arrows with the Red Dragon Shortbow. Roland advanced toward prisoners despite fire danger.
Father Corvan retaliated with devastating fire magic, and the sacrifices continued—each feeding power into the ritual. The party managed to free and save two hostages; several others were lost to the vortex or sacrificed.
Mid-battle, the ritual completed. Volcathar ascended from Young to Adult Red Dragon, gaining legendary actions and increased power. The dragon immediately fixated on Kavu—repeatedly executing aerial grapples, dropping him mid-air, and allowing Feather Fall rescues as Kavu narrowly survived each pass. This fixation suggests a deeper connection between dragon and kobold.
Closing
The session ended with Volcathar seizing Kavu and fleeing northward with him. The remaining party stood wounded and nearly out of spell slots. Father Corvan's fate remains unknown.
