| In-Game Date | Day after cultist attack |
| Location | Flamemeet / Toothmaw Cliffs |
Summary
The party defeats and captures cultists from the Red Dragon Inn attack, interrogates the prisoner Merrick, and learns of an imminent dragon ascension ritual at Toothmaw Cliffs led by Father Corvan. Ivor, a military authority figure, briefs them on the threat and proposes a combined assault: the party disrupts the ritual while militia secures the lair and rescues prisoners. Time pressure intensifies with ritual completion scheduled for "tomorrow evening."
Key Events
Act 1: Combat Resolution
- Combat with cultists concludes from previous session's setup
- Cultists subdued/defeated
- Innocent townspeople (Larkin, Nettle, Bindi, others) are rescued from Red Dragon Inn
Act 2: Prisoner Interrogation
- Captured cultist Merrick brought for interrogation
- Merrick bound with cult's own cursed bracers/mask (burns upon death)
- Merrick shows PTSD-like fear when forced to explain the bracers: "When we die, they burn along with us"
- Cult Cell Structure Revealed:
- Operates in scattered caves throughout the mountains
- Each cell separated to prevent exposure of other groups
- Orders come via dead-drop system: rock placed 100 paces from cave cell entrance
- Multiple cells but poor operational security - Merrick admits knowing locations he shouldn't
- Toothmaw Connection: Merrick has been taken on "field trips" to place called Toothmaw where "all the sacrifice happens for the ascension"
- Ritual Timeline: Ritual scheduled to complete "by tomorrow evening" - critical deadline established
- Sacrifice Operations: Party learns cultists gather innocents from villages for sacrificial purposes
- Merrick shows disdain for kobold sacrifices vs. human sacrifices: "I always assume they're too small, right? They're not worth the same as, like, a human sacrifice"
- Indicates hierarchy in sacrificial value
- Leadership Chain: Merrick does not know much about other cells or whether all cultists will gather for ritual but confirms Father Corvan in leadership position
- Warren Safety: Cobalt's Warren (kobold settlement) confirmed NOT a target; cultists focus on village populations
Act 3: Strategic Briefing with Ivor
- Ivor (described as military authority/"purple dragon knight") conducts interrogation with bureaucratic intimidation tactics
- Ivor references administrative forms: TC-7 (witness testimony), AV-2 (adventure disclosure), HD-12 (unknown purpose)
- Maps & Intelligence: Ivor pulls out military maps and briefing materials in tube
- Toothmaw Location Details:
- Scout Reports on Enemy Forces:
- At least 10+ cultists observed, possibly more
- Father Corvan present (scouted on three separate occasions)
- Volkathar (dragon) appeared on three separate observation occasions
- Original Military Plan: Ivor was preparing 30 militia for direct assault - suicide mission against dragon and cultists
- New Combined Strategy Proposed:
- Party assaults ritual site to disrupt ritual and draw Volkathar's attention
- Militia secures the lair, rescues prisoners, and prevents escape
- Combined operation provides significantly better chances than militia alone
- Strategic Unknowns Discussed:
- Volkathar may be bound by powerful magic (binding may enable OR prevent ascension)
- Dragon identity uncertain - might not be the real dragon, could be illusion
- Leadership structure and magical capabilities unknown
- Possible item or artifact binding the dragon
- Ivor's Threats & Bureaucratic Warfare:
- References "Chapter 47, Contempt of a Municipal Authority. You're gonna wish I had just used the thumbscrews"
- Threatens administrative punishment and economic destruction via legal proceedings
- References "Rico" laws (appears to relate to unit/group accountability)
- Assigns Haldak role as "court minister" and orders completion of forms TC-7, AV-2, HD-12
- Verification Plan: Party decides to consult Elder Dracor for verification about Volkathar's status and guidance before assault
- Militia Coordination: Ivor offers militia support, supplies, and guidance; establishes communication protocol via sending spells
- Departure: Plans made to depart early next morning for Elder Dracor's location
Act 4: Final Strategic Discussions
- Party and Ivor establish communication protocol for coordinated assault
- Ivor provides supplies and offers horses/carts for journey to Toothmaw Cliffs
- Kavu's Emotional Response: "I'd hate to have to try to break into my own home" - indicates complicated feelings about returning to his homeland
- Elder Dracor Significance: Only known person to speak directly to Volkathar; potential source of intelligence about dragon's true status and willingness
- Fire Safety Parting: Ivor jokes: "Good luck out there, and try not to violate any fire safety codes"
