Summary
The party experiences deep moral conflict after Kavu allows the drow prisoner Xynia Vandree to escape rather than watch her be executed. Kavu confronts the entire party about their cowardice, sparking individual character introspection and apologies. The party discovers a massive chasm blocking their path to Neverlight Grove and realizes Xynia Vandree will arrive first on her lizard mount. Mysterious Mykonid travelers appear at the cliff edge.
Key Events
Party Conflict and Moral Debate
- Kavu walks away from the group momentarily and returns with a powerful accusation: the party are cowards
- Kavu approaches each character individually with personal criticism:
- Selene (Ranger): Her "fire soul" from Icewind Dale has become "small and timid" from captivity; she's afraid to take risks
- Rowan (Paladin): Acts as a passive observer despite wielding divine fury; lacks initiative and fervor
- Lothorian (Drow): Learned the wrong lessons from dangerous uncles; overly cautious, paralyzed by fear of punishment
- Haldak: Burned divine flames as threats twice; keeps trying to befriend enemies instead of protecting the group; afraid of being alone
- Caspian / Unknown Female Character: Despite Kavu's efforts to free her from slavery, hesitated to aid him; even pointed weapons at him during the escape
Kavu's Core Justification
- Xynia Vandree was being sentenced to unjust death (forced off a cliff)
- Kavu chose to let her escape rather than watch her die
- He accuses the party of hesitation when they could have:
- Pulled him off during the fight
- Held down the drow woman instead
- Personal Revelation: Kavu confesses that despite breathing fire, he is afraid of fire itself. He respects fire's non-discriminatory destructive power and its ability to leave renewal alongside destruction.
Counter-Argument and Party Discussion
- A character responds that they too would have helped the prisoner escape if forced to witness unjust execution
- Philosophical defense: "If life is like that in your perfect world, then I should have died a teenager" — implying a dark past where unjust death was common
- Lothorian's Political Concerns:
- Killing Xynia Vandree openly would create "dire consequences" due to drow house politics
- Houses tolerate each other but are not true allies
- Mentions vague threat: "Artemis and Trary"
- Acknowledges Xynia Vandree is now their "bargaining chip" but may also become a threat
- Feels responsible but couldn't speak up in time
- Haldak's Attempt at Salvage: Suggests they might recapture Xynia Vandree before she reaches the Grove
Strategic Discussion: Poison and Tactics
- Party realizes they possess drow poison (Lothorian has vials; Kefkas has poison-tipped arrows in his Bag of Holdings)
- Debate over effectiveness of poison against Xynia Vandree
- Haldak's Controversial Idea: Proposes using Stuhl (the young mykonid they're escorting) as bait, since Xynia Vandree knows the creature
- Kavu's Objection: "I think we can do better than using the tiny creature that could die easily as bait"
- Haldak acknowledges the plan isn't moral but is "naturalistic"; they agree to discuss with the full party later
One-on-One Reconciliations
- Haldak & Kavu: Haldak approaches and apologizes. Kavu says "Tell me when you're ready to talk" but allows him to walk beside him
- Haldak Later Apology: He admits fear paralyzed him; he was afraid for many things and scared of a lot. "I am going to make this up to you"
- Lothorian & Haldak: Discuss the drow woman being their "bargaining chip" and the danger of "unleashing the demon whores into the Underdark" (reference to a previous contract)
- Party movement continues with Kavu maintaining pace but not engaging; Selene catches up and keeps pace; Caspian takes front of party line; Kefkas naps while walking
The Grand Chasm Discovery
- Selene scouts ahead 10-15 minutes
- Discovers a massive chasm/cliff face overlooking thousands of feet of darkness
- Key Finding: A tiny, lit patch of trail is visible far below — described as "a single thread, a filament in a spider's web"
- This is the main traveled route through the Underdark, branching:
- South to Neverlight Grove (party's destination)
- North to Valkenveld
- Critical Problem: The winding descent path would take MORE THAN TEN DAYS to traverse on foot
- Strategic Disadvantage: Xynia Vandree's lizard mount can climb sheer cliff faces, meaning she will reach the bottom well before the party
Encounter with Mykonid Travelers
- As Selene scouts the cliffside, two humanoid figures emerge from the north (off the main path)
- Description: Nearly silent by nature, not attempting stealth; gesticulating excitedly but not speaking audibly
- Distance: Initially 60 feet away from Selene's hiding spot
- Identification: Appear to be Mykonid (fungal creatures) with visible mushroom caps in darkvision
- Note: Possibly the "Cheech and Chong pair" referenced in prior sessions, potentially named Mush and Spore
NPCs Encountered
| NPC | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xynia Vandree | Drow Prisoner | Escaped on lizard mount; now threat/ally |
| Unidentified Mykonid Travelers (2) | Unknown | Possibly Mush & Spore; emerged from north off main path |
Referenced NPCs
- Kosuth - Fire god; Kavu has faith in this entity
- Stuhl - Young mykonid the party is escorting to Neverlight Grove
- "Artemis and Trary" - Vague threat mentioned by Lothorian; possibly assassin or rival house
Loot / Discoveries
- Drow poison (Lothorian's vials) - effectiveness depends on target constitution
- Drow poison-tipped arrows (in Kefkas' Bag of Holdings)
- Discovery of the Grand Chasm as the main passage through the Underdark
- Confirmation that a 10+ day descent lies ahead
Party Notes
- Party Cohesion: Significant moral conflict occurred, but personal reconciliations and apologies have begun healing the rift
- Fear and Faith: Characters grappling with their own fears and what it means to have courage
- Political Awareness: Lothorian brings house politics into focus; the party's actions have wider implications
- Movement: Kavu emotionally withdrawn but reconciling; party maintains cautious pace
Threads Opened / Advanced
Opened:
- The Escape of Xynia Vandree and Its Consequences: Major political problem in motion; drow house retaliation possible; party may become "the chip" instead of having one
- Moral Conflict Within the Party: Kavu's accusations create deep introspection about bravery, agency, and principles
- The Chase for Xynia Vandree: Logistical challenge of crossing a 10+ day descent before she reaches the Grove
- The Mykonid Travelers: Two mysterious fungal creatures with unknown purpose or allegiance
- Stuhl's Role in Capture Plan: Debate over protecting vs. using as bait
Advanced:
- Neverlight Grove Journey: Party actively seeking the Grove; chasm discovery confirms distance and difficulty
- Party Cohesion: Internal conflict simmering but reconciliation beginning; need to rebuild full trust
- Xynia Vandree's Status: Escalates from prisoner to potential threat/rival/unwitting ally
