Othorion Baenre

Born in secret to two of the Underdark's most powerful houses, named "light in the darkness" by a father who feared what Lolth would do if she knew — and she was watching anyway.

Heritage

Othorion was born in secret in an Underdark cavern to Tiago Baenre and Saribel Xorlarrin. The birth was witnessed by Lolth herself. His name, given at birth, means "light in the darkness." Tiago arranged for Jarlaxle to raise Othorion to keep him safe from the political consequences of his existence.

The Stolen Identity

A recovered memory (Darklake Vision) showed Artemis Entreri poisoning Othorion with Styx water at One-Eyed Jax and stealing his identity. Othorion had no memory of the crime he is accused of committing — until Sloobludop.

The Grazzt Pact — Fulfilled

At Revel's End, Grazzt appeared to Othorion in the prison courtyard and offered to return his stolen memories in exchange for one thing: travel to Sloobludop and ensure Blip Blop Pod's ritual completed without interference. Othorion agreed. The binding was formal.

In the Underdark, Othorion kept his word. He protected the ritual. It completed — and in doing so, accidentally summoned all the demon lords into the Underdark. Demogorgon rose from the Darklake and destroyed Sloobludop. The party fled.

Grazzt's end of the bargain — the return of Othorion's memories — was delivered (exact timing and form to be confirmed with GM).

Motivations

Othorion came to Phandalin looking for answers about the crime he allegedly committed — the assassination of the wife of High Captain Throah Tearl in Luskan. He had no memory of the night in question. With his memories now returned via the Grazzt pact, what he knows and what it changes is significant and underdocumented (confirm with GM what he recovered).

He has been traveling with the Forge Wardens since the Phandalin arc and is loyal to the group, even as Blackrazor increasingly strains that loyalty.

Darklake Vision — Recovered Memory

Othorion recovered a memory of Artemis Entreri poisoning him with Styx water at One-Eyed Jax and stealing his identity.

Birth Vision

Witnessed his own birth in a hidden cavern outside Menzoberranzan, lit by pale fungal light. Tiago Baenre and Saribel Xorlarrin were present — Tiago stayed and helped, Saribel alone until he found her. At the moment of birth, a shard of stone from a long-healed wound passed from Saribel to the child's hand. His first breath ended her pain.

Tiago asked what the child would be called. Saribel looked at her son — bright red eyes, open, unafraid — and named him.

"We shall name him for the light in the darkness… Othorion."

Tiago arranged for Jarlaxle to take the child to safety. Lolth was watching.

Soulgaze

Broken mirror imagery — fragments showing him as a House Baenre assassin and as a figure holding a radiant gold feather before kneeling drow. A silver thread connected to a spider / Lolth and to a radiant moon below. Endless abyss behind everything.

Character Arc

Arc Summary

Identity, memory, prophecy, and the corrupting influence of Blackrazor. Othorion does not know who he truly is — Entreri stole the memories that would tell him. The sword whispers promises that fill the void.

Quenthel Baenre's Offer

The Matron Mother of House Baenre has made direct personal contact. She is offering Othorion a position no male drow has ever held — at her side, as a trusted equal, with freedom from both Lolth and the old social order. She claims Lolth is diminished and that she has freed the driders from their divine curse as proof of her independent power.

The offer is sophisticated manipulation, but the power behind it may be real. It also directly threatens Jarlaxle Baenre's covert protection calculation, and raises the question of what Quenthel knows about the "crown with no king yet" in Othorion's bloodline.

Sloobludop — What Othorion Is Responsible For

The Crescent Blade Prophecy

Selene and Kavu have referenced: "a blade taken from a living terror / a survivor pulled from certain death / a chain of events leading to catastrophe." Blackrazor was pulled from the living Tarrasque. Othorion survived his birth, his captivity in Luskan, and Entreri's poisoning. The chain is in motion.

Blackrazor's Agenda

The sword is not simply evil — it is purposeful. It is building Othorion's dependence and isolation. Each violent incident is a test of whether the party will continue to try to separate them.
