Background

Early Life (Novella Chapters 1–4)

Kefkas was born on the surface. His parents were killed during a slave caravan to Menzoberranzan when he was 7 years old. He was purchased from auction by a drow noblewoman of House Oblodra — he called her "Master." She outbid Quenthel Baenre in platinum and declared: "He is no one's property."

The Master protected him from experimentation and trained him in blind fighting and blade work. When House Oblodra fell, she shoved him through a closing portcullis to escape — her fate after that is unknown. He emerged in Skullport and then Waterdeep at age 8.

The Stinging Bard

In Waterdeep, Kefkas became a pit fighter with performance flair — known as "The Stinging Bard."

Current Mission

Kefkas is traveling to Luskan to investigate a framed young man bearing the Baenre name. He believes this is connected to his Master's fate and the truth of what happened to House Oblodra.

Backstory — The Stinging Bard

Source: "The Stinging Bard" novella (Chapters 1–4)

Origins in Slavery (1480 DR, Age 7)

Kefkas was born a half-elf on the surface. At age 7, he and his parents were captured by drow slavers en route to Menzoberranzan. His father fell under slaver blows on the march. His mother sang a lullaby and was killed. Kefkas witnessed both deaths.

At the auction in Menzoberranzan, he was claimed by a drow noblewoman of House Oblodra before Quenthel Baenre could acquire him. She paid in platinum and declared: "He is no one's property."

Training Under His Master (House Oblodra, 1481–1482 DR)

His Master (true name unknown to Kefkas; see her file) trained him in blade combat, blind fighting, and discipline. She protected him from House Oblodra's predatory interests — including her own sister Araj Oblodra, who wanted Kefkas as a research subject.

Master's core philosophy: "Even a blade forged in darkness can be wielded for honor."

The Fall of House Oblodra (1482 DR)

House Baenre and allies attacked House Oblodra — partially motivated by Oblodra's use of psionics (not sanctioned by Lolth) and suspected mind flayer interbreeding. Master and Kefkas fought their way through kin-turned-enemies. Kefkas made his first kill in that fight.

Master shoved him through a portcullis as it closed: "Go — now!" He tumbled into the sewer system beneath Menzoberranzan, carried by the current to Skullport, and then surfaced in Waterdeep.

The Stinging Bard (1482 DR – present)

At 8 years old, Kefkas survived Waterdeep's streets through pickpocketing, begging, and blade-dance performances. Over the years he became a famous gladiatorial performer — the "Stinging Bard," known as much for performance as combat.

He was searching for news of his Master when he heard of a young man in Luskan bearing the Baenre name — which led him north and eventually to the party.

Kefkas' Sword — "Emberwake"

Described as "Frostbrand scimitar — Emberwake" with "Sylvan Runes and in common 'Deathcloak Lank.'"

Sister Blade

Drizzt Do'Urden's sword Icingdeath and Kefkas' Emberwake are sister blades. Drizzt confirmed this during the Neverwinter encounter.

Kelvin's word puzzle revelation: The word inscribed on the blade (from a word puzzle Kelvin solved) spells "Haldak Tencloak" — Haldak's name is on Kefkas' sword. # TODO: Significance unknown.
