Buppido

Race: Derro
Status: Active
Role: Prisoner
Delusion: Believes himself to be a god

A mad derro with grandiose delusions of divinity, Buppido is unpredictable, cunning, and capable of terrible violence in service of his twisted beliefs.

Description

Appearance

A male derro, small and wizened by nature. Like all derro, he possesses an alien, unsettling appearance that reflects his people's strange evolution in the lightless depths.

Personality

Buppido is surprisingly gregarious and talkative, which masks a deeply disturbed mind. He demonstrates a keen intellect and disarming manner, concealing the soul of an insane killer. His most prominent delusion is his absolute conviction that he is the living incarnation of a derro god (Diinkarazan), and that he possesses a divine mandate to expand his "worship" through violence.

Buppido rationalizes any murder as a blood sacrifice to create a path of carnage through the Underdark for his people to follow in glory. He meticulously keeps track of his victims and arranging their organs. He is convinced that he can't be killed in his mortal form—only sacrificed for more of his god's purposes.

His madness is wrapped in a deceptively pleasant exterior. He is obsessed with being heard and understood by others, continuously rationalizing his violent impulses as divine will. This makes him both pitiable and deeply dangerous.

Role in Campaign

Buppido is one of the ten other prisoners held with the player characters in Velkenvelve's slave pen. He is a member of their fellow prisoners during the escape.

Buppido knows how to reach Gracklstugh from the southern route out of Velkenvelve. He can also find a route from the Darklake if the party desires to return to his people. He intends to murder the player characters one by one, believing them to be divine offerings delivered into his hands—unless he is recognized and stopped first.

His presence in the escape party creates significant danger, as his tendency toward premeditated murder of his companions will likely emerge once he no longer views the drow as a controlling force.

Background

Buppido is a derro, one of the twisted deep dwellers who dwell in isolated communities throughout the Underdark. He is imprisoned at Velkenvelve, likely for past violence or strange behavior even by derro standards.

His madness revolves around his belief that he is a living god—specifically, the incarnation of a derro deity. He views the act of murder as sacrifice, and he has developed an elaborate theology to justify the killing of others. His "divine plan" involves spreading a path of blood through the Underdark in the name of his god, with the ultimate goal of leading his people to glory.

Unknown to other prisoners, Buppido is infected with the same demonic spores that afflict Sarith Kzekarit. Like Sarith, this infection influences his behavior and delusions, though Buppido interprets it as further evidence of his divinity rather than a curse.
