Background
Venomfang is a young green dragon who took up residence in the ruined watchtower of Thundertree — a town long since abandoned after a volcanic eruption and a subsequent undead infestation. By the time the Forge Wardens arrived, Venomfang had already been there long enough to develop strong opinions about architecture and his own importance.
He is young enough to be impulsive and self-aggrandising. He is old enough to be genuinely dangerous. The combination is precisely as unstable as it sounds.
Personality
Venomfang has the energy of a teenager who has just discovered he is, objectively, the most impressive creature in any room. He knows he is powerful. He wants everyone else to know he is powerful. He finds it baffling that people do not immediately understand this.
He is not, despite appearances, entirely stupid. He can negotiate. He honours deals when they serve him. He responds well to flattery — not because he is naive, but because being acknowledged as impressive is simply correct, and he appreciates accuracy.
The Cult of the Dragon worshipping him he found appropriate. The party showing up and actually talking to him rather than attacking he found refreshing. Rydoth tolerating his presence for years he found predictable — what else would you do with a dragon?
His famous opinion on the subject of habitation:
"Bitches love castles."
Said without irony. He has wanted a proper castle for years. The tower at Thundertree was a starting point, not a destination.
The Watchtower Lair
Venomfang claimed the highest point in Thundertree — the watchtower — and made it appropriately lair-like. The Cult of the Dragon cultists who had set up in the ruins below worshipped him. He considered this a reasonable arrangement: they left offerings and occasionally brought him interesting things; he did not eat them.
Encounter with the Forge Wardens
The party met Venomfang in Sessions A15 and A16. Rather than fighting him — which would have been inadvisable — they negotiated.
The Deal:
- The Forge Wardens clear Kragmaw Castle of its current inhabitants (goblins under Black Spider's control)
- Venomfang vacates Thundertree and leaves the region alone
- The party receives the location of Kragmaw Castle from Rydoth
- Deadline: 10 days
Venomfang's end goal was transparent from the moment he agreed: he wanted an upgrade. Thundertree was fine. A castle was better. The party gave him a castle.
