Zariel
Redeemed. Her wings burn with holy fire now, not hellfire. She ruled Avernus. She knows how demons think, how they fight, how they die.

Zariel is Roland's mother. She arrived at The Scar where her son nearly died. She fought to protect him. She did not identify herself to the party.
The Hellfire Hammer's Bel inscription reads: "She still loves you. That is why she fell." — this refers to Zariel's fall from grace, caused (at least in part) by her love for Roland.
Whether Roland recognised her, whether she acknowledged him, and when this revelation becomes player-facing are key campaign decisions. She departed without making her identity explicit.
Background
Zariel was once the Archduchess of Avernus — she fell from grace, descended into devilhood, and ruled the first layer of Hell for centuries. The details of her fall involve Roland's existence. She was then redeemed — her wings now burn with holy fire rather than hellfire, and her blade blazes with light that makes demons flinch.
She is no longer what she was. But she has not forgotten what she was. She understands vengeance. She understands redemption. She knows demons from the inside.
At The Scar
Zariel arrived with Caladorn (riding Arveiaturace), Karlach, and Wulfgar at The Scar during Errtu's emergence.
She brought Wulfgar specifically — she understood that some debts can only be repaid in person. Six years of Errtu's torture, a death and a reincarnation, and now this: the chance to look the demon in the eye. She gave Wulfgar that closure. That's what redemption looks like in practice.
Her role in the fight was decisive. Former Archduchess of Avernus — she ruled Hell against the Abyss for millennia. Every demon knows Zariel. Errtu recoiled from her the instant he saw her — not from the hellfire he remembered, but from what had replaced it. Redemption. That was worse than anything hellfire could do to him.
Her parting words to Errtu before he discorporated:
"In a hundred years, when your banishment ends, we'll be waiting. All of us. And we'll send you back again."
She lingered a few hours after the battle, then departed — returning to whatever duties and purposes call her.
Role in Campaign
The Roland Arc
Roland is the son of Zariel and the paladin Edgard. His triple heritage — human, celestial, infernal — comes from this lineage. The Hellfire Hammer found in Session 4 includes Bel's inscription: "She still loves you. That is why she fell" — referring to Zariel's fall, rooted in love for Roland.
Her appearance at The Scar — where her son nearly died — and her departure without identifying herself is a deliberate choice. She chose to protect him without revealing herself. The question is why, and when the revelation becomes player-facing.
