He has spent his entire life proving that what you are born into does not determine what you become. He recognised something in Othorion immediately. He's been watching ever since.
Background
Drizzt Do'Urden is one of the most famous figures on the Sword Coast — a drow who rejected Menzoberranzan, the spider goddess, and the entire brutal architecture of drow society to forge his own path on the surface. He is a ranger of exceptional skill, wielding twin scimitars (Twinkle and Icingdeath), accompanied by his magical panther Guenhwyvar, and preceded by a reputation that travels faster than he does.
He is one of the Companions of the Hall — the legendary fellowship from Icewind Dale that includes Wulfgar, Bruenor Battlehammer, Catti-brie, and Regis.
Connection to the Forge Wardens
Neverwinter — B04 and B05
Drizzt had been tailing the party since before Neverwinter — something confirmed during his intervention, which was too well-timed to be accidental. When House Baenre assassins ambushed Othorion and Pip in Neverwinter's streets, Drizzt appeared and helped them escape.
Pip was hit by a crossbow bolt carrying drow poison. Drizzt's panther Guenhwyvar carried Pip to the House of Knowledge. Roland used Lay on Hands — twenty points plus five more to remove the poison.
Drizzt also confirmed two things in those sessions that mattered beyond the immediate rescue:
- That Kefkas' scimitar Emberwake is the sister blade to his own Icingdeath — the two weapons share a forge origin; what that means for Kefkas' history is unresolved
- That he would speak to Jarlaxle about the attack on Othorion — placing him in a position of knowing about Jarlaxle's Luskan operations and having enough standing to approach him directly
Training with Othorion
The user has confirmed that Drizzt trained with Othorion at some point during the Neverwinter arc. This has not been documented in the vault session notes. The sessions covering this period (B04–B06 in Neverwinter) should be checked and updated to include the training. Key questions to confirm: when did it happen (before or after the ambush?), what was the nature of the training (sparring, technique, philosophy?), and did anything significant happen during it?
The Jarlaxle Thread
After B04, Drizzt said he would speak to Jarlaxle about the House Baenre attack on Othorion. This creates a complication: Drizzt knows about Jarlaxle's Luskan operations, and Jarlaxle knows the road ambush he ordered against Othorion was a performance — not a genuine assassination attempt. What Drizzt told Jarlaxle, what Jarlaxle told Drizzt, and what either of them chose not to say, is an unresolved thread with significant consequences for the covert protection story.
Companions of the Hall — The Scar
Wulfgar, one of Drizzt's oldest companions, appeared at The Scar in D06, brought by Zariel for his own confrontation with Errtu. Drizzt himself was not present, but his circle is clearly active in the region.
Guenhwyvar
Drizzt's animal companion is a magical black panther summoned from the Astral Plane via an onyx figurine. She is not always present — she can be called and dismissed, and spends time recovering on her home plane. In the Forge Wardens' encounter, she acted as a field medic: recognising that Pip needed immediate magical attention and carrying her to the House of Knowledge. Guenhwyvar does not make choices like that for strangers. Drizzt must have sent her, which means he was tracking Pip's situation and made a deliberate call.
Personality
Drizzt carries the weight of being a permanent exception — the drow that surface people trust, the drow that drow society cast out, the ranger who proved the world could be otherwise. He has been doing this long enough that the weight doesn't show on the surface anymore. What does show is a precision of judgment about people: he does not waste his attention on those who don't deserve it.
He chose to watch the Forge Wardens. He chose to intervene for Othorion specifically. He chose to send Guenhwyvar for Pip. None of those were accidents.

- Why is he watching Othorion specifically? What does he see?
