Predecessor Matron Zeerith Xorlarrin

She named him "the light in the darkness." That alone tells you everything about what she chose, and what it cost her. Now she rules the house that would have condemned him.

Background

Saribel Xorlarrin was a favoured daughter of Matron Zeerith Xorlarrin — third house of Menzoberranzan's Ruling Eight, masters of the arcane and divine. She was a priestess of Lolth and a sorceress of real ability, precise and controlled, a credit to her house's reputation for magical mastery.

She is now Matron Mother of House Xorlarrin — the same house that would have condemned her child.

She was not supposed to fall in love.

The Story

The Mycarn Delve

During a scouting mission to the Mycarn Delve, Saribel's party triggered an ancient Netherese ward buried in a collapsed cavern. The explosion killed her companions. A shard of heated stone drove deep into her side — too deep to remove without magic she did not have. She should have died in that cave.

Tiago Baenre was there. Not by chance, but as someone who moved through dangerous places as a matter of habit. He had been watching from the shadows. When the explosion hit, he shielded her with a spell and kept her alive.

He tended her wound over three days in a shallow cavern near the collapsed pass, and stayed when she expected him to leave. The shard remained embedded — too deep to remove safely. She hated needing him. She hated herself for not hating him enough.

By the fifth night, it had become something else.

The Secret

The child was carried in secret. Menzoberranzan does not permit what they were. House Baenre would never acknowledge a Xorlarrin sorceress. House Xorlarrin would condemn a forbidden pregnancy to the altar. Male children were sacrifice-fuel for political ambition — Matron Zeerith had said exactly this in assembly.

Saribel's sister Velatha discovered the truth. Lolth, she claimed, had shown her in dreams. Velatha threatened to report it to the Matron. Saribel killed her — drove her into her own ruined chamber, used a stored Glyph of Warding, finished it with a Fireball under a Globe of Silence. No witnesses. No body. No alarms.

Then the birth began.

The Birth

She reached the place where she and Tiago had always met — a hidden ledge above Donigarten, beyond the patrol routes. He found her there, already in labour, alone. He stayed, held her, worked as best he could.

The child was born in a hidden cavern outside Menzoberranzan, pale fungal light the only illumination.

In his tiny hand: the shard. The piece of stone from the original cave-in that had been "the source of her never-ending pain" — embedded inside her since the day she should have died — had passed to the child at birth.

"This child… brings peace, at the moment of his birth."

She lay back. The pain was gone.

The Naming

Tiago asked what the child would be called.

She looked at her son — bright red eyes, open, unafraid — and gave him his name.

"We shall name him for the light in the darkness… Othorion."

What Happened After

Personality

Saribel was defined by the gap between what drow society required of her and what she actually was. She was genuinely brilliant, genuinely devout (until she wasn't), and genuinely capable of cruelty when it served her. Killing Velatha was not a difficult choice. Giving up Othorion was.

She did not pray to Lolth when she needed something most. She prayed to something else.
