"You will be free. You will be powerful."
— Quenthel Baenre, to Othorion
Who She Is
Quenthel Baenre is the current Matron Mother of House Baenre — the First House of Menzoberranzan and the most powerful drow noble house in the city. She did not inherit this position quietly. She holds it.
She signs herself "Architect of a New Era" — a title she has chosen herself, not one Menzoberranzan gave her. That choice says everything about how she understands her own project.
The Letter to Othorion
Quenthel has made direct personal contact with Othorion, sending him a formal letter offering him a position in Menzoberranzan. The full text is preserved in Quenthel's Letter to Othorion.
The offer, summarised:
- Return to Menzoberranzan not as a servant but as a leader
- A position unlike any male drow has ever held — standing at her side as a trusted equal
- Privileges beyond anything the old drow social order permitted males
- Permission to learn magic and study among the most powerful
- Protection from all enemies, including from Lolth herself
- Freedom from the old expectations and "petty games"
What she is claiming:
- That the old drow order — built on fear of Lolth — is crumbling
- That Lolth is diminished and will fall with those who cling to her
- That she, Quenthel, has already broken the curse of the driders — freeing those Lolth had punished — as proof of her independent power
- That she is building something that supersedes Lolth's authority
What This Actually Means
Key Claims in the Letter (For Reference)
| Claim | Significance |
|---|---|
| Lolth is "diminished" and her followers will fall with her | Quenthel is positioning against Lolth directly |
| Driders "now walk free under my protection" | She claims to have broken a Lolth divine curse |
| Othorion will hold "a position no male has ever held" | Breaking the drow matriarchal hierarchy — radically |
| "Lolth herself will not have the power to undo what we are building" | She believes she has moved beyond Lolth's reach |
| Signs as "Architect of a New Era" | Self-styled — this is her project, not House Baenre's tradition |
