The Frostmaiden — goddess of winter's cruelty and the cold that kills without mercy. She has drawn the Everlasting Rime over Icewind Dale and does not intend to lift it.
Role in Campaign
Auril is the architect of the Everlasting Rime — the perpetual darkness and supernatural winter that has gripped Icewind Dale for two years. The party encountered her influence through the Stewards of Auril during Arc C and carry the consequences of that conflict.
The Everlasting Rime
Auril has cast a permanent magical darkness over Icewind Dale. The sun does not rise. Blizzards intensify. The Ten-Towns have been slowly dying under the weight of the endless winter.
The Rime is not simply cast and forgotten — Auril leaves her fortress each night and flies across Icewind Dale for eight to ten hours, recasting and strengthening her spell. Each pass makes the winter colder and more severe.
Location — Grimskalle
Auril resides in Grimskalle, a fortress of black ice on the Island of Solstice in the Sea of Moving Ice. She leaves the island each night to maintain the Rime, returning before dawn.
Followers
Stewards of Auril
The Stewards of Auril are Auril's eyes and trackers in Icewind Dale. They pursue those who defy her Rime by surviving and thriving rather than submitting. The party drew their attention during Arc C.
Geluvicken
Geluvicken is Auril's most zealous mortal follower — a frost giant and daughter of Queen Vassavicken. She is fanatically devoted to the Frostmaiden.
Combat — Three Forms
Sacrifices
The Ten-Towns make regular sacrifices to Auril on her demand. The nature and schedule of these sacrifices is part of how she maintains her hold over the region.
