Mythology

The ancient ones told tales of Asteth, the Empress of Flames: a burning, three-headed serpent that emerged from a door of fire. She was a fickle ally, always behaving in hungry self-interest. The Astral Titans kept her at arm's length — close enough to borrow her power, but leaving room to retreat lest they be burned by her caprices.

Asteth is depicted in two forms: a three-headed serpent wreathed in fire, or a muscular humanoid woman whose crowned head is obscured in flame. Clerics of Asteth typically wield the domains of Arcana, Forge, Light, or War.

Role in Campaign

Asteth was the wife of Kossuth in the Faerûnian pantheon. She was lost in the Aetherial Expanse — gone beyond the sight of her divine husband, her whereabouts hidden from the Great Planes.

Kavu unknowingly carried her essence, which is why Kossuth chose him as his Flamekeeper. Kavu was a living echo of Asteth's location. Her arc concluded when Kavu reunited them.

GM Notes

The Aetherial Expanse

Asteth's departure from the Aetherial Expanse — the plane she governed as Empress — has unknown consequences for that plane. During her absence, something may have moved into the vacuum: other powers, divine encroachment, or the Expanse itself beginning to unravel without its sovereign. What Asteth returns to, and what she will do about it, is unresolved.

This is not currently relevant to the party. They are on Faerûn's material plane and have no thread that leads to the Aetherial Expanse. The consequences of her vacancy and return are a background fact, not an active threat to the Forge Wardens.
