Stool's home — a vast cavern of luminescent fungi and myconid colonies, hauntingly beautiful and deeply strange. The party has promised to bring Stool home, but something foul lurks beneath the grove's serene surface.
Description
Overview
Neverlight Grove is a vast Underdark cavern that serves as home to a large myconid community — intelligent, vaguely humanoid fungi who communicate through spore-speech and live contemplatively in fungal circles. It is Stool's homeland — and by extension, also home to creatures like Rump-a-Dump (another myconid who joined the party briefly). The grove is filled with enormous bioluminescent fungi of every color, casting eerie radiance through the cavern.
The myconids have dwelt in Neverlight Grove for untold generations, experiencing little or no change in their lives until recently. Now their world is being altered faster than many of the fungi folk can keep up, and characters who linger in Neverlight Grove might find themselves in great peril.
Despite its beauty, the grove harbors deep corruption. Something foul has taken root here — Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi, has begun to exert her influence over the grove's sovereign and inhabitants, twisting the peaceful myconid community toward madness and contamination.
Atmosphere
The grove is famous for its eerie, otherworldly beauty — towering fungi of vivid bioluminescent color (pale cream and beige stalks growing thick and tall, resembling a surface forest in an alien landscape), carpets of spores drifting through the air like snowfall, and an otherworldly quiet broken only by the deep harmonic communion of myconid spore-speech. Water trickles from walls of the cavern into a crude but effective terraced irrigation system. A thick, sweet smell of fungi of all colors and sizes, with many glowing with a strange, inviting light, fills the air.
The overall effect is unsettling and dreamlike rather than overtly hostile — though visitors moving through the grove in recent times have noticed that the myconids seem disturbed, preparing for a celebration of some sort, proclaiming "The day of joy is nigh!" and exhorting others to "Rejoice in the true union that will meld us all!"
Strategic Significance
Neverlight Grove is one of the notable waypoints in the Underdark and is known as a place of relative safety — or was. The myconids historically welcome travelers peaceably and their spore-communication abilities make them uniquely aware of activity throughout their cavern network.
History
Origins
Neverlight Grove has been home to myconids for generations. The myconid community is divided into seven circles: the Circle of Hunters, the Circle of Explorers, the Circle of Growers, the Circle of Builders, the Circle of Sowers, the Circle of Masters, and the Inner Circle (the grove's two myconid sovereigns). For centuries, the colony existed in peaceful isolation, with the myconid sovereigns ruling wisely and the circles maintaining the specialized functions of the colony.
Recent History — Zuggtmoy's Corruption
Two years ago, Sovereign Basidia arrived at the grove with two circles of myconids, and Sovereign Phylo welcomed them gracefully. However, the myconid colony has fallen under the sway of Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi.
After her forced exit from the Abyss (during the summoning ritual that caused the current demon incursion), Zuggtmoy found her way to Neverlight Grove and took up residence there. She has gradually corrupted Sovereign Phylo, convincing the sovereign through seductive offers of parasite-driven power and promises of magnificent fungal growth to work with her toward a dark goal: the complete assimilation of the grove's myconids under her influence.
Phylo, now enthralled, is establishing Zuggtmoy's control over the grove. The other circles are becoming unwitting vessels for Zuggtmoy's spores. A wedding rehearsal has been arranged — a spectacular display showcasing the "union" between the grove and Zuggtmoy — designed to spread Zuggtmoy's influence throughout the myconid colony. The other myconids, unaware of the corruption, are proclaiming "The day of joy is nigh!" and exhorting others to "Rejoice in the true union that will meld us all!"
Current Situation — Session C16
The party is currently traveling toward this location (Session C16) after leaving the Restless Camp. A drow woman is awaiting them there, and the party is racing against a timeline to reach her — possibly before the wedding rehearsal/event takes place.
In the Campaign
Current Destination — Session C16
The party's destination following the Restless Camp. They are described as "racing against a timeline" to reach this location, suggesting:
- The drow woman's availability is time-limited
- Conditions at the location may change or deteriorate
- Other forces may be moving toward the same destination
Travel and Access
The party is traveling by standard overland/underground means from the Restless Camp. No specific terrain difficulties or hazards have been noted, though Underdark travel inherently carries risks.

Secrets & Hidden Information
GM Notes
Zuggtmoy's Presence and Plans
Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi, has corrupted Sovereign Phylo and established a presence in Neverlight Grove. Her goals are:
- To transform the myconid colony into willing servants through infection with her spores
- To use the grove as a stronghold and breeding ground for her fungal influence throughout the Underdark
- To orchestrate a "wedding rehearsal" event that will spread her influence to the largest myconid gathering, effectively converting the entire colony to her service
The Wedding Event: This is NOT a genuine wedding ceremony. It is a mass infection event disguised as a celebration. Twelve bridesmaids of Zuggtmoy (myconid servants) and six chamberlains (also myconid servants) are being prepared. The event is designed to present the "union" between the grove and Zuggtmoy as cause for joy, when in reality it is mass subjugation.
Current State
The party approaches Neverlight Grove during the preparation phase. The wedding rehearsal may occur during or immediately after the party's arrival. If Sovereign Basidia and the uninfected myconid circles have not yet been fully converted, they may seek the party's assistance — though whether the party will be allies or seen as invaders/threats depends on how the party's arrival is framed.
CRITICAL: If the party delays or fails to act, Zuggtmoy's wedding proceeds, and the myconid colony is lost. The grove becomes a demon lord's stronghold in the heart of the Underdark.
Plot Preparation
When the party arrives, determine:
- The drow woman's identity and appearance
- Her reason for requesting this meeting
- The actual time-sensitive nature of the encounter
- Whether the meeting is friendly, hostile, or ambiguous
- What she knows and what she wants
- How the location reacts to the party's arrival
- Whether other NPCs or forces are present or arrive during the meeting
Contingency Scenarios
- If party is delayed: Does the drow woman leave? Become hostile? Reset expectations?
- If party is early: Is she present? Prepared? Surprised?
- If Xynia Vandree's threat was acted upon: Is the location damaged, defended, or abandoned?
- If party is separated: Can they reunite at the location? Is it a rally point?
- If party is captured en route: Is the meeting location revealed under interrogation? Does it become a rescue objective?
Foreshadowing Opportunities
- NPCs along the journey can mention the location (rumors, warnings, directions)
- Environmental signs or Underdark phenomena can point toward it
- The sense of urgency can build through random encounters or observed activity
- Scattered clues about the drow woman's identity can create anticipation
