Description
Old Owl Well is the ruin of an ancient watchtower built during the height of the Netherese Empire — one of countless outposts that once dotted the landscape before the empire's collapse. The tower itself is collapsed and largely unremarkable. What lies beneath it is not.
The site sits northeast of Phandalin along the Triboar Trail. Prospectors from Phandalin had been chased off by undead in the weeks before the party's arrival — the work of Hamun Kost, who set up camp here and surrounded himself with twelve zombies to keep the area clear while he excavated.
The Underground Compound
Beneath the tower ruins lies a buried Netherese complex — partially intact, sealed for centuries. The party explored it on Kost's behalf over Sessions A08 and A09.

Sylphrena
Sylphrena was a Netherese archivist from the Enclave of Ythryn. When the enclave fell, her master Sandor captured her soul in the lantern to save her from death. The spectre guarding the chest was a remnant of that protection. Roland attuned to the lantern permanently — she now travels with him as a companion spirit and arcane advisor.
Hamun Kost's Excavation
Hamun Kost, a Red Wizard of Thay, occupied the site before the party's arrival. He:
- Deployed twelve zombies as perimeter guards
- Was seeking Netherese artifacts and magical knowledge
- Claimed to be "retired" from Thay and excavating for personal interest
- Made a deal with the party (50gp each + profit share) to explore the underground compound
- Received the scrolls and texts the party recovered; departed afterward
